Is Your Visa Pathway Still Your Best Option? Inside the 2026-27 Migration Program Shake-Up

On 12 May 2026, the Australian Government confirmed the 2026-27 permanent Migration Program at 185,000 places, unchanged from last year. But if you stop at that headline number, you'd miss what actually matters: where those places are going has shifted more significantly than it has in years, and that shift could change which pathway makes the most sense for you.

If you're already in Australia, you're now the priority

Across both the Skill and Family streams, the government is prioritising applicants who are already living in Australia. Of the 185,000 total places, 129,590 are reserved for onshore applicants, with the remaining 55,110 going to offshore applicants, mostly high-skilled migrants addressing long-term workforce needs.

This isn't just a preference on paper. It lines up with Ministerial Directions 117 and 119, which changed visa processing order to favour onshore applicants for family and skilled visas respectively. If you're already onshore on a temporary visa and weighing your next step, this is a meaningfully better position to be applying from than it was last year.

Employer-sponsored visas are the standout growth pathway

The biggest single shift in the program is the Employer-Sponsored category, which jumped 32%, from 44,000 to 58,040 places. This is now the largest growth area in the entire program, and reflects the government's broader focus on migration pathways that lead to sustained work outcomes.

If you have a job offer, or are in a role where sponsorship could be an option, this is worth exploring seriously this year, more places generally means more room to be considered.

Regional visas have far less room this year

On the other side, Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) places dropped sharply, down 57%, from 33,000 to 14,110. If your plan was built around a regional pathway, this doesn't mean the option is gone, but it does mean the pool is a lot smaller than it was, and it's worth understanding how that affects your realistic timeline and chances.

State Nomination edged up slightly

Subclass 190 (State Nominated) places rose modestly, from 33,000 to 35,500. It's a smaller shift than the employer-sponsored or regional changes, but still worth factoring in if you're comparing pathways.

What this means for your next step

None of these changes affect visa eligibility criteria directly, they affect how many places are available in each category and who gets prioritised for processing.
