Australia offers three main types of skilled migration visas: 189 (Skilled Independent Visa), 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa), and 491 (Skilled Work Regional Visa). Here are the key differences between these visas:


189 Visa (Skilled Independent Visa)

  1. No Sponsorship Required: Applicants do not need state or family sponsorship.

  2. Points System: Requires a minimum of 65 points on the points test.

  3. Work and Live Anywhere: Visa holders can live and work anywhere in Australia.

  4. Permanent Residency: This is a permanent visa, granting most rights and privileges of an Australian citizen.


190 Visa (Skilled Nominated Visa)

  1. State Sponsorship: Requires nomination by an Australian state or territory government.

  2. Points System: Requires a minimum of 65 points on the points test, with state nomination adding an extra 5 points.

  3. Residency Requirement: Visa holders must live and work in the nominating state for at least two years.

  4. Permanent Residency: This is a permanent visa.


491 Visa (Skilled Work Regional Visa)

  1. Regional Sponsorship: Requires sponsorship by an Australian state or territory or an eligible family member living in a designated regional area.

  2. Points System: Requires a minimum of 65 points on the points test, with state or family sponsorship adding an extra 15 points.

  3. Residency Requirement: Visa holders must live, work, and study in a designated regional area for at least three years.
