Laura Hall once worked in the corporate world, but her passion for creativity led her to make a bold decision-she left her job in Sydney to start PHYLLi Designs, a bespoke hat brand. Initially, she sold her hats at markets in Sydney, but when the pandemic hit, it forced a significant shift in her business and life.
A Turning PointIn 2020, as COVID-19 shut down cities and events, including fashion shows Laura was set to participate in, she decided to move back to her hometown of Scone, in New South Wales. While the move seemed daunting, it turned out to be the perfect environment for her to reimagine and rebuild her business. In Scone, Laura leaned on the local community and utilized Australia Post's MyPost Business services to pivot PHYLLi Designs to an online business, with orders coming in from across Australia and even internationally.
Rebuilding and GrowthWhat began at her dining table soon grew into something much larger. Laura eventually opened a flagship store and production studio, turning her brand into a unique success story. PHYLLi Designs’ handcrafted hats, made with high-quality materials from around the world, have attracted attention from not just local customers but even celebrities.
Partnering with her local post office, Laura was able to streamline shipping processes and cut costs, helping her deliver her products efficiently across the globe. This partnership, along with her creative vision, has helped PHYLLi Designs flourish.
An Entrepreneurial LessonLaura’s journey shows that no matter where you are, with a little faith and support, you can build something meaningful. Her “tree change” didn’t just lead to business success-it helped her rediscover purpose and creativity. PHYLLi Designs is a testament to Laura’s resilience, adaptability, and passion for her craft.
“If you’re thinking about starting something of your own, this is your sign,” says Laura. “There’s a way and a community that will help you, no matter where you are. Just take that first step and trust the process.”
