The Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code sets out the requirements for conducting citizenship ceremonies in accordance with the Australian Citizenship Act 2007, the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code defines the procedures for conducting citizenship ceremonies. Earlier this year, the federal government announced that the code that governs the time of ceremonies would be changed. Starting in 2023, Citizenship Ceremonies will be allowed to take place three days before or after January 26.
Nevertheless, the government still expects councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, according to Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles.
It is too expensive to operate on a public holiday, so a number of councils are considering holding the ceremonies outside of January 26.
